Being the Change – How Easy It Can Be

I have been watching and absorbing the videos that Nicky Mih of Inspired Living has been sending out as part of the Quest to Be The Change Group. The messages are short, inspiring gifts of information supporting and encouraging us to make a difference in the world to someone in some way. So what does it mean to make a difference? What ever you want it to mean.

Nicky has a charity that supports women and young girls to get out of the sex slave industry and into school and work. Another woman I know rescues horses from the slaughter yard, rehabilitates them and adopts them out to families to love.  I know not all of us needs to or even wants the responsibility and commitment to start a charity, but even very small acts of kindness can make a huge difference and it doesn’t have to cost anything more than a little time and energy.

So here are my top five way to make a difference –

  1. Volunteer – donate a bit of time to assist and already established charity organization. Most run mainly on donation and your skills or energy may be just the thing they need. The walk for Daniel is coming up, perhaps you can volunteer to help with that.
  2. Connect – Spend the whole day just being with your family or friends. I mean uninterrupted,  technology free, fully focused, ‘I’m here for you’, type of connection. That will make such a difference to your children, partner or friend – what a gift to give them – yourself.
  3. Tutor – What skills or knowledge do you have that you could share with someone who if they had that knowledge, would open up a new world of possibilities? Never underestimate the power of knowledge. Whether it is showing kids at school how to draw, teaching your nephew to fish, explaining the internet to your elderly neighbour or showing some underprivileged girls how to put on make up – it could exactly want they needed at that time in their lives.
  4. Smile – They are free, energizing for both you and the recipient and can brighten a somewhat dull day. I know that the days I am feeling great and my whole being is smiling, people notice (even though I wonder sometimes if my fly is undone!). People want some of that feeling so give it away!
  5. Self – devote time to your own growth and evolution. Make it a priority. Any change – personal or global begins with us. When you are happy, content and in love with who you are the repercussions of that on your family, friends and community can and will be huge.

So my fellow ‘stars’ let your light shine so that your glow can light the paths for others to follow. And always remember you do make a difference just by being you.

  • I just loved this post Natalie. You summed up everthing I feel. Just imagine how our world would be if we all made a purposefull positive difference. We need to stop looking “out there” for solutions & bring it back to us, you, me & I. If we want to see a positive change in the world “it start with you”. Great post, I look forward to your next one xxxx

Ceinie, we know that you and I share that vision and that in our own unique ways we are making a difference and being the change. Your cards are a perfect example of a small but powerful way to create the ripple effect. Keep up the amazing work. x

      Hi Corinna,
It is about giving and receiving the natural flow and order of things. I have just looked at your website. All I can say is WOW! Your video on the home page made me cry. What truly amazing things you are doing with our youth, with our future. Congratulations.
      Blessings,
      Natalie

It really is so simple to be the change we wish to see. Sometimes we just make it so complicated. Lovely suggestions Natalie xx

I agree Kama, I think if we just get over ourselves a bit and then extend ourselves to embrace others, the giving is easy and profound.

  • Hi Nat, thank you for this blog. It reminds me how many times throughout the day when I am when I am “being the change”. It also reminds me that everything I do has an influence, and that I can chose to influence in ways that encourages the change that I want to see in the world!!!!

Have a wonderful day, Nessie 🙂

I love your encouragement to teach a new skill. In my work with survivors of sex slavery it is what they wanted the most. They wanted to learn. They wanted to know stuff. They want to be able to Be the Change they want to see. They want to go to school and they want to read hundreds of books and then they want to go to university because they know that then THEY can stop sex slavery.

It is easy for us to forget that we know so much. Most of these girls have only been to school for 2 years. They would LOVE to know what you know! Let’s get creative, what do you know that you are pleased you know? If you know it, don’t assume they know it, grab a pen and write it down, or grab a video recorder. We have lesson plan formats for anyone happy to give it a go. In fact, combine it with connecting with your friends and family and have an evening of knowledge sharing!

If anyone is interested email nicky@free-to-shine.com for lesson plan formats, so that what you know can then be taught to these children.

and we’re looking for teachings on a range of things including but not limited to: Self motivation, planning your own day, calculating daily/weekly expenses, feelings and recognising various emotions. Confidence, The Female Body, Not allowing anyone to touch your child’s genitals, And no-one has the ‘right’ to touch you either. If you choose to get married, choose a husband who will not beat or rape you. Deserving kindness and accepting nothing less. (girls have been taught they are worthless and it is likely that they may marry a man who will beat them into submission. Menstruation, How we get pregnant, Pregnancy, Child development, Playing with your child (most children don’t play) stimulation, Learning through Playing, Your role as Mum ie provide fruit & vegetables, brush teeth twice a day, exercise, play with my child, ensure child attends all 12 grades of school – most attend only 2-4 years, protect my child from others who may offer them jobs in the city – traffickers, even grandparents who may sell them). Self-Worth / Self-esteem / Valuing Me / Self Love (according to society, as women they have little worth and as a ‘broken’ woman they are worthless. They also explain to me that they have never been loved.) Friendships. Being Assertive – saying No (they are taught to be obedient and do as they’re told). Saying ‘No’ to family (if they do not learn how to do this there is real danger either they or their future children will be back in sex slavery). Washing hands, with soap, after bathroom & before cooking. Job/Careers Education (one lesson each on the work of a teacher, child-carer, pharmacist, psychologist, cook, chef, cleaner, house-keeping, receptionist, doctor, journalist).

We would LOVE your teachings! If you wanted to take 2 hours to share what you know this could provide an hour of knowledge to 1600 children this January!!!

    Much love,
    Nicky Mih

What a great concept Nicky and it is free to give your skill and wisdom. We could build a whole folder of lessons that would benefit these girls!
